How it started

Three chapters, one small Thai kitchen

01

Home-style Thai cooking on Portage Avenue

Shaba Thai Cuisine began as a passion for real Thai home cooking, brought to the West End and downtown Winnipeg. Our owner still cooks in the kitchen and greets guests at the table, so every curry, stir-fry and bowl of noodle soup tastes the way it does in a Thai family home — not a big chain. Regulars near the University of Winnipeg, Spence, Central Park and West Broadway call us their best-kept secret for authentic Thai food.

02

A menu of Thai curries, noodles and street food

Our Pad Thai, Massaman curry, Green Curry Soup, Pad Siew and Spicy Seafood Stir-Fry (Pad Talay) sit beside street-food favourites like Pad Kapow, Khao Soi and Thai fried rice. Start with crab rangoon, rice rolls or vegetable spring rolls with peanut sauce, then cool down with a Thai iced tea, Thai iced coffee or bubble tea. Every plate is cooked to order with fresh ingredients, your choice of spice level and portions generous enough to send you home with leftovers.

03

Vegetarian, vegan and everyone welcome

Many of our dishes are prepared meatless by default, with tofu and vegetable options always available, and we happily adapt recipes — coconut-milk bubble tea included — for vegan and gluten-friendly diners. Whether it is a quick student dinner, a casual date night downtown, family takeout or catering for a small event, we serve Winnipeg by dine-in, takeout, delivery and catering, Tuesday to Sunday from 4 PM.

This is the best Thai food I’ve had in Winnipeg! The portions are so big & the flavours are so so good! We had the crab rangoons, green curry, coconut rice, & the pad Thai. The service was amazing and the lady that runs it is the kindest woman ever, such a great experience. Definitely coming back!!

Massaman curry internationally has something of a reputation for intense, borderline euphoric flavour. The curry I had more than lived up to this lofty standard. One of the most sensational things I’ve eaten in a very long time.

Best Thai food I’ve had in years... Every dish was amazing. Would definitely recommend the pad siew and the Tom Kha soup. I will definitely come back to try more dishes.

My new favourite in Winnipeg! We started with the Panang dip with fried naan. The dip was delicious — somewhat sweet and coconuty; paired with the crispy naan, it was a definite win. I followed it with the peanut butter stir fry with tofu.

First but not last time at Shaba Thai! Everything we had was so delicious! Started with the crab Rangoon and rice rolls (shrimp) followed by pad Thai (pork) and green curry (chicken) both level 7 spiced. It was so good we left full.
